Description

Toio Led lamp was designed by Achille Castiglioni and his brother Pier Giacomo in 1962, and it remains one of the clearest examples of their ready-made design approach. The fixture repurposes fishing-rod rings to guide its power cable and takes cues from a car headlamp, giving it the character of an industrial style floor lamp built from raw, functional parts rather than decorative ones.

A hexagonal, nickel-plated brass stem telescopes to adjust height, resting on a weighted base made of angle iron and formed steel. The fixture directs indirect light upward from an included PAR56 LED retrofit bulb, and runs at 23 watts on a 120-volt supply. An integrated switch controls power, though the fixture itself is not dimmable.

As much a design object as a light source, Toio Led holds a place in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art, and it remains a recognizable piece among mid century style lamps that favor visible mechanics over concealed hardware. This black-finish version pairs its brass stem with a black cord and matte base for a graphic, industrial silhouette suited to a statement spot beside a sofa or reading chair.
