Vase Model 8 is the member of the DELFT BLACK EDITION VASE BY MARCEL WANDERS that stops the conversation entirely. Where The Rabbit operates through character and the Killing of the Piggy Bank through wit, Vase Model 8 operates through an act of pure formal audacity: a large, faceted geometric jewel — glossy, multifaceted, completely resolved — attached to the side of a bulbous ribbed porcelain body as though it grew there. There is no precedent in the history of Delftware for this detail. That is entirely the point.
The vase sculpture itself is substantial and deliberate in form: a full, rounded profile drawn downward into a short ribbed column before settling onto a flat circular base. The surface is matte black, the lower body smooth and deeply pigmented, the upper register decorated in Marcel Wanders’ characteristic intricate scrollwork and floral motifs rendered in the Black Edition’s signature tone-on-tone reflection technique — the pattern visible only in the interplay of matte and reflective glaze surfaces, shifting as the light around it moves. The decoration is there and not there, depending entirely on where you stand.
Then there is the gem. Positioned at mid-body, protruding outward and slightly forward, the faceted jewel form is finished in high gloss black — a direct material contrast to the matte body it emerges from. Its geometry is deliberate and architectural: a cut stone, cleanly faceted, that introduces the language of jewellery into the language of ceramics with no apology and no explanation. The object simply contains both, simultaneously, and leaves the viewer to reconcile them.
Produced by Royal Delft — whose tradition of hand-crafted Delftware dates to 1653 — Vase Model 8 belongs to the Black Edition’s relationship with Royal Delft’s Black and White Reflection Series: a body of work that asks what Delftware becomes when stripped of its defining blue and forced to carry meaning through texture, tone, and form alone.

The rounded form with delicate tonal Delft patterns barely visible in the matte black glaze is so subtly luxurious, and that bold geometric black diamond handle jutting from the side is such an architectural surprise. It’s the kind of piece that rewards close inspection. Dark luxury at its absolute finest!
