Vitra Akari 1 Ad Boho Lamps
Some objects transcend the category of lighting entirely and become something closer to poetry. Vitra Akari 1 Ad Boho Lamps is one of those objects. Designed in 1951 by the legendary Japanese-American artist and designer Isamu Noguchi during a visit to Gifu — a Japanese town celebrated for its centuries-old tradition of paper lantern and parasol craft — the Akari 1AD is among the most enduring and beloved works in the entire history of modern design.
The name akari means both “light” and “lightness” in Japanese, and no lamp embodies those dual qualities more completely. The Vitra Akari 1AD Table Lamp is handcrafted by Japanese artisans from traditional washi paper — the ancient Japanese art of hand-making paper from mulberry bark — stretched over a delicate bamboo and steel wire frame, with distinctive graphic detailing on the shade surface that gives the 1AD its unique visual character within the series. When illuminated, the washi paper shade transforms electrical light into something warm, diffuse, and deeply human — sunlight filtered, softened, made intimate.
Measuring 43cm tall with a 26cm diameter and authenticated with Vitra’s distinctive sun-and-moon logo, the Akari 1AD is part of the Vitra Design Museum Collection. It arrives flat-packed and accepts up to a 4W LED E27 non-dimmable bulb, with a 1.3m cable length.
