STRYPY VASES BY JAIME HAYON
There is a game hidden inside every STRYPY VASES BY JAIME HAYON. Jaime Hayon takes the most archetypal ceramic form available — the bottle vase, as old and universal as pottery itself — and transforms its entire surface into a field of surrealist imagination: fine black lines drawn with the confidence and spontaneity of a practiced hand, tracing geometric forms, arcs, diamonds, and figures that converge and diverge across the ground color until, at a certain angle or in a certain light, a face appears. A character emerges. Something from Hayon’s fantasy world surfaces from the abstraction and looks directly back at you.
This is the graphic version of the STRYPY VASES BY JAIME HAYON collection, and it is the more openly theatrical of the two. Where the metal STRYPY VASES BY JAIME HAYON edition uses precious metal stripes on pure white to create an interplay of surface and light, the graphic editions use the surrealist repertoire — the same tradition of images that encode meaning in abstraction, that find figures in pattern, that allow decoration to carry narrative — as the organizing principle of each piece’s entire visual world.
Four ground colors anchor four entirely distinct personalities. The pink Strypy is soft and dreamy in its base tone, its surface scattered with the precise black lines and colored dots — red, grey, gold — that Hayon uses as a personal pictorial language, a shorthand visual alphabet that reappears across his ceramics, prints, and illustrations. The yellow Strypy is the most energetic of the group: a vivid, high-saturation ground against which the black line constructions — geometric towers, looping curves, triangular architectural fragments — take on the quality of a fantasy cityscape. The white tall Strypy is the most classically refined: the same line vocabulary on the cleanest possible ground, the colored dot accents — red, black, blue, gold — reading like careful punctuation in a very deliberate composition. The fourth vase, wider and lower in its proportions, confronts the viewer most directly: on its broad rounded body, the lines converge unmistakably into a face — a round, almost ceremonial visage in red and grey that occupies the front of the form with the presence of a mask, while striped bands at the neck add a second graphic register above.
Each STRYPY VASES BY JAIME HAYON vase in the graphic series is, in this way, a different story told in the same visual language — the same hand, the same sensibility, a different configuration of the elements each time. Grouped together they create an extraordinary display: a family of characters that animate a console, a shelving arrangement, or a dining table centerpiece with genuine narrative energy. Individually, each vase sculptue holds a space with the authority of a collector’s object that happens also to be a fully functional vessel for flowers, branches, and botanicals home decor.
