ISSIMA BY SAM BARON
There is a particular quality shared by objects that have been genuinely thought through — a sense that every curve, every proportion, every decision about surface and color was arrived at not arbitrarily but through a long conversation between the maker and the material. The ISSIMA BY SAM BARON has that quality in abundance. Three pieces, three heights, one coherent vocabulary: turned ceramic bodies in the tradition of classical column-making, finished in soft enamel tones that sit somewhere between blush, stone, taupe, and cream, and appointed at key moments with precious metal detail that catches the light with quiet precision.
Each piece in the ISSIMA BY SAM BARON serves double duty — as a vase sculpture for stems, branches, or dried botanicals, and as a candle holder for pillar or taper candles. The forms make both uses feel inevitable. The tallest piece, SB/129 at H.35 cm, presents a clean cylindrical column rising from a turned and bobbin-shaped stem above a broad stable base — a shape that distills centuries of classical column proportions into a purely contemporary object. In cream matte enamel, it reads as architectural, calm, and quietly monumental. The medium piece, SB/130 at H.27 cm, shares the same base language but opens at the top into a cup — the interior glazed in polished gold, so that whether a candle flame burns within or the piece stands empty, the gold interior glows with a warmth that the exterior tones deliberately withhold. The smallest piece, SB/131 at H.20 cm, is the most restrained: a short, stable cylinder base topped by a wide, shallow saucer disc in gloss taupe — a form that echoes the pedestal as much as the candlestick, and that works as a resting place for a single candle or a small sculptural object with equal elegance.
Together, the three pieces create a landscape on a tabletop — layered heights, related tones, and enough visual variety between the forms to keep the arrangement interesting from every angle. Separately, each holds its own with complete confidence. They are the kind of objects that look considered in a dining table centerpiece, a mantelpiece grouping, a console styling, or a bedside arrangement — present without demanding, decorative without being ornamental.
Sam Baron’s approach in the ISSIMA BY SAM BARON series places ancient formal traditions — the turned column, the chalice, the pedestal — in conversation with contemporary color sensibility and material finish, producing objects that feel deeply familiar and entirely fresh at the same moment. The soft colored enamels — tones of warm grey, nude, taupe, and off-white — are chosen to live easily alongside natural materials: stone, linen, aged wood, dried flowers, and unglazed ceramics. The precious metal interior detail lifts the collection from restraint into something that holds light.
