The form is identically breathtaking: a generous, rounded body tapering to a narrow neck, its entire surface clothed in individually raised and ribbed shell scales arranged in a seamless Art Deco pattern. But in black vase sculpture, the play of light across the relief becomes something different entirely. The gloss finish creates deep, pooling shadows between each scale and sharp crests of reflected light at every raised edge — a continuous, shifting interplay of dark and light that makes the surface appear almost liquid from certain angles.
