BURGUNDY FUSCA VASE BY CONSTANCE GUISSET
A calla lily caught mid-unfurl. A diva’s stage gown frozen at the moment of greatest drama. A lion’s mane in full spread. Constance Guisset designed the BURGUNDY FUSCA VASE BY CONSTANCE GUISSET to live in the imagination as much as in a room — an object whose silhouette is so organically compelling, so unapologetically voluptuous, that the eye keeps finding new readings of it depending on the light, the angle, and the mood brought to the encounter.
The form is built from a tension between two very different ceramic gestures. The base is a tapered cone in deep gloss burgundy — plum-dark, polished, self-contained, carrying its color with the quiet intensity of a garnet held up to a lamp. From this grounded stem the piece opens upward and outward into a wide, dramatically tilted disc: a brim that spreads and tilts at an angle suggesting movement — a bloom caught mid-rotation, a collar lifted by a gust, a wave at the precise moment before it breaks. The inner face of this disc is finished in warm copper-rose gold, its surface scored with fine radiating ridges that run from the central opening to the outer rim like the veins of a leaf or the pleating of a gown, catching and refracting light differently across every inch of the surface. The effect is simultaneously botanical and theatrical — organic in its reference, spectacular in its presence.
The opening itself sits at the junction of disc and stem — small, eccentric, positioned just off-center in the way that a real calla lily’s throat sits not quite where you expect it — and it is here that stems, branches, or a single dramatic flower can be placed, the disc becoming a collar of extraordinary decorative power around whatever it holds.
BURGUNDY FUSCA VASE BY CONSTANCE GUISSET does not need to hold anything. As a standalone burgundy vase sculpture object on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or pedestal, it earns its place with complete authority. But when it holds — a stem of eucalyptus, a branch of dried pampas, a single dark dahlia — the combination of natural material and ceramic artifice produces something that no purely decorative object could achieve alone.
Available in two scales — the large Cod.1830 at 46 × H.46 cm and the smaller Cod.1831 at 32 × H.33 cm — both sizes carry the full drama of the form. Pair them at different scales for a grouped display, or allow one to stand alone and hold the room entirely by itself. Either way, BURGUNDY FUSCA VASE BY CONSTANCE GUISSET is one of those rare vases that changes the space it inhabits rather than simply inhabiting it.
