VASE WITH FLOWERS BLUE
Most decorative vases are decorated with flowers. This one is made of them. The VASE WITH FLOWERS BLUE by Francisco Polope inverts the conventional relationship between vessel and ornament: the flowers are not applied to the vase as surface decoration but compose its very form — they are the walls, the profile, the structure. The result is an object that reads differently as you move around it, its silhouette shifting with every angle as individual blooms resolve into a unified vessel form and then dissolve again into their constituent parts.
Form, Finish, and the Work of the Hand
The blue version of this vase is built in Lladró’s characteristic pastel palette: white and soft grey tones provide the ground, with touches of deep blue applied selectively to add depth and visual weight. Two finishes — gloss and matte — are used in combination across the surface, a deliberate contrast that allows different elements of the composition to catch or absorb light differently. The gloss areas reflect and shimmer; the matte areas sit quietly behind them. Together they create a surface that rewards extended attention in a way that a single-finish piece cannot.
Every detail has been etched and finished by hand. Francisco Polope designed the sculpted form; Lladró’s team of ornamentation artists then worked through each petal, sepal, and stem individually, recreating the naturalistic detail that makes each flower convincing in isolation as well as effective as part of the whole.

A 2023 Release That Earns Its Place Alongside Older Masterworks
At over 17 inches tall and 14 pounds, this textured vase has the physical authority of a major sculptural object. It sits comfortably as an art sculptures for sale on a console, a dining room sideboard, or a library shelf, alone or as part of a considered grouping. Insurance is included with every purchase. For collectors of Francisco Polope’s work — a sculptor whose pieces for Lladró span the Venetian Carnival bust and the Bacchante with Panther — this 2023 release shows a different, quieter side of the same mastery: nature as structure rather than subject.
