SERPENTINE LIGHT BY FRONT

At 68 cm wide and 82 cm tall, the SERPENTINE LIGHT BY FRONT announces the design’s ambitions in full. Five flat oval fan-shaped shades — each printed with fine radiating black spokes on translucent non-woven PES — are arranged in a loose, overlapping cluster that shifts in silhouette depending on the angle from which it is viewed. It is a lamp that earns its place in large rooms by visual weight rather than physical mass: at just 1.54 pounds, it floats. 

A Composition That Changes With You 

In the SERPENTINE LIGHT BY FRONT, the individual shades become legible in a way the smaller version, with its tighter composition, does not quite allow. Each shade is an oval disc of printed non-woven PES — light-transmissive, and printed with fine black radiating lines that evoke the spokes of a Japanese folding fan or the vein structure of a lily pad. Fixed to coated steel connectors and suspended from a single black cord, the five shades overlap at different angles, creating a composition that reads simultaneously as a bloom, a mobile, and a still-life caught mid-rotation. 

When lit, the PES shades distribute light evenly across their full translucent surface — soft, warm, and without glare. From directly below, the lamp becomes a layered pattern of overlapping pale ovals. From the side, it flattens into a silhouette that reads as a single graphic form. The Serpentine Light rewards being seen from different positions in the room throughout the day, and changes character as the ambient light around it shifts.
