About the SAMURAI WARRIOR SCULPTURE

Lladró chose stoneware as the material for this sculpture because of its suitability for large-scale work. The stoneware body accepts enamel pigments that, when crystallised in the kiln, develop a nuance-rich surface that cannot be reproduced exactly. The result is that every Samurai Warrior carries a finish slightly different from every other — a condition that makes each piece genuinely one of a kind. Sculptor Alfredo Llorens designed the figure in 2016, drawing on research into the visual culture of Japan’s premodern armored warriors. 

The craft extends well beyond the raw material. Lladró’s decorators engrave the armor, the kabuto helmet, and the saya by hand on every single piece — a process that reflects the studio’s commitment to handwork at every stage of production. At close range, the engraving reveals the individual marks of the artisan who finished it. At a distance, those marks resolve into a figure of total authority. It is precisely this inscription of craft into the object’s surface that separates a Lladró sculpture from production art.
