The Meaning Behind “Akari”

For this luminous series, Isamu Noguchi selected the name “Akari”, a Japanese word meaning brightness, light, and also lightness. It perfectly captures the dual essence of the collection: both a source of illumination and a symbol of airiness and simplicity.

The Akari sculptures continue to bring a soft, sun-like warmth into modern interiors, turning everyday light into a poetic experience.
